Smart Bridge Sockets, a semi-finalist in the Standard Chartered Bank Women Entrepreneurs competition, were selected as 1 of 3 winning teams in The Resolution Project’s Social Venture Challenge (SVC) at the UN Youth Assembly earlier this month!
The Team
“Winning these awards are just the beginning,” said Anna McGilloway, a sophomore in the Electrical Engineering department here at CCNY. She has worked with her teammates for only four months. Anna works with Erzhena Badmatsyrenova and Gayashan Fernando, also undergraduate Electrical Engineering students at CCNY, and Professor Ahmed Mohamed serves as the team’s mentor.
Smart Bridge Sockets is working on a portable device that monitors and visualizes the consumption of electricity. By allowing customers to see things like where their energy is coming from, how much energy they use on a daily basis, and how to save energy, people will be incentivized to save money and use energy wisely.
For winning the SVC, Smart Bridge Socket will receive a stipend and an invitation to join The Resolution Fellowship, an opportunity that gives students access to an incredible array of mentors, advisors and training from the social impact space.
The team has already expressed how effective Zahn Center bootcamp and mentors have been, as they now see their business from a new perspective. Being able to consult with other professionals and strategists has helped them go from being passionate about their product to working out the logistics on becoming a self-sustaining business.

Last Fall, the Zahn Center embarked on a Pathway Partnership with The Resolution Project. The SVCs are run in collaboration with a variety of institutions – from colleges to Clinton Global Initiative University to the UN – and only undergraduate students who have not won previous prizes may enter.
